Teenage drug use

Here's a new report from Indiana University:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Drug use by Indiana sixth through 12th graders continues to decline but findings from the 19th Annual Survey of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use by Indiana Children and Adolescents, conducted by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University Bloomington and funded by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration's Division of Mental Health and Addiction, also pointed to an increase in marijuana use.

Things I would like Downtown

These are just some ideas of what I think would be nice to have Downtown and what I would support by going there:

1. A railroad museum with an area for model railroading exhibits.

2. A parked train dining car and cooking car to make a resturant.

3. A theater decorated like an old theater that shows reduced price classic movies and Disney films. Possibly a once a year film festival of local made movies.

4. A covered flea market or flea market in an old building open every weekend.

5. One block of stores with fasades copied from antique photos of the town.

Pumpkins

I started several years ago growing a small garden in my backyard just as a hobby and for some good fresh veggies. I tried growing pumpkins just for the grandkids to carve at Halloween and each would choose their own plant so as they grew they could brag who had the biggest pumpkin and who had the most pumpkins on their plant. They grew great, the kids loved watching them and carving them, and after Halloween they were thrown in the garbage. It seemed a true waste to me and I remembered many years ago, my grandmother actually made a pumpkin pie from a real pumpkin.

Sound of Silence

Hundreds of voices were silenced last night when CNHI through Hey Martha blocked entry and destroyed all comments to any forums except the heavily regulated forum in Enid, OK. Some comments on open forums, unregulated, are obnoxious, painful, or libelous but so are daily conversations on the street. This ugliness is the high price that must be paid to have total freedom of speech. Freedom is not a thing that comes easily, it must be fought for and the price of keeping it must be bared every day.

Survey finds most believe health care reform myths

INDIANAPOLIS – Do Americans believe controversial assertions about health care reform including death panels, threats to Medicare, abortions, illegal immigrants, and other claims which the White House has labeled as “myths”?
Findings from a new national survey of Americans by researchers from Indiana University Center for Health Policy and Professionalism Research and the Indiana University Center for Bioethics says that Americans do believe the “myths” about health care reform, confirming that the White House may indeed be losing this battle.

New state slogan?

Do you have an idea for a new state slogan?
The state’s various slogans include “Enjoy Indiana, “The Crossroads of America” and “Restart Your Engines,” but a clothing company is inviting Hoosiers to come up with a slogan with a more hopeful, more optimistic or more humorous spin.

What, me worry?

Here's some bad news for all the worriers out there.
The Associated Press reported today that new research by Purdue University scientists might help to explain why people who are chronic worriers can send themselves to an early grave.
The researchers found that people who tend to worry or become easily stressed are more likely to smoke, drink or abuse drugs — all of which can lead to an early death.
